February’s Topic: The Intensity of the 2e Child/Teen
Many twice exceptional kids have a particular intensity about them. They tend to be hypersensitive and can experience sensory input and emotions more intensely than others. Psychologist Kazimirz Dabrowsky called these intensities overexcitabilities. Additionally, our kids can be relatively immature, particularly when it comes to social interactions and managing emotions. This combination of hypersensitivity and immaturity can lead to meltdowns and explosions. In this month’s sessions, we will discuss how our kids demonstrate their intensities and how we can help them turn these traits and subsequent behaviors into assets. We will discuss perspective taking and how to help our kids identify and name their feelings. We will also examine our own feelings about our children and how we can get caught up in thinking they “should” react or behave in a particular way that doesn’t reflect the reality of who they are.
