Welcome to TECA’s Discussion topic “NYC DoE Advocacy.” This topic is for parents of NYC public school children and others who are interested in advocating at the Department level for recognition of 2e children and their needs. Currently there are no placements within the DoE that recognize and support the needs of 2e kids, forcing families to either accept inappropriate placements for their children, cobble together complex supports and accommodations to help their children “get through” or seek educational opportunities in private programs. We believe none of these “solutions” is acceptable because they are either inadequate or not realistic for all families due to the intensive requirements of time, knowledge, money and access that these remedies demand. It is our hope that, working together, the parents of 2e children can effect change at the DoE, so that 2e children become accepted and embraced as integral and valued members of their classroom and school community.

Yew York State Residents – please consider taking the action described below to protect special education rights of NYS public school children.

Governor Cuomo’s 2017-2018 budget proposal would allow school districts to seek broad waivers from laws and regulations that provide important protections for students with disabilities – including 2e students. For example, these waivers could allow school districts to avoid certain requirements regarding class size, behavior intervention plans, and notification of certain changes in placement. This broad waiver provision would erode students’ rights. The New York State Legislature has rejected this proposal in the past. With the current political climate in Washington, we need the State to stand firm on rights for students with disabilities, not enact legislation would take these rights away.

Hello All..I am new to this group. I have already went through the IEP Process and now I am waiting to review the schools and sign the IEP. However, I have not received it yet. We have already received the acceptance letter from one of the 2 schools for Twice Exceptional Kids in New York …..THE QUAD PREPARATORY SCHOOL. However, as you know it is very expensive and based on the IEP they suggest that my son have a paraprofessional which is additional money. Now we may not even have the impartial until August however the school wants their money now. I am working with a lawyer but of course it’s a process…My question is …Is there anyone who knows of anyone who has went to the QUAD or has their Twice Exceptional Child have to have a para and is this an expense that the DOE will pay for if it’s on the child’s IEP. I am very confident with tjhe lawyer that I have however, I want to make sure that all our ducks are in a row.

Hi Giovanna, Welcome to the group. And congrats for getting your son into Quad – that is great news! My son did not go to Quad – he went to Lang – but he did have a para while he was there. The para was added before we got it on his IEP and we were still able to obtain a reimbursement for the para in addition to the tuition. We were able to do this for four years in a row. We never got 100% but we always got above 90%. I think that Quad and Lang are pretty similar in terms of tuition so I think it is a comparable situation. Keeping my fingers crossed for you – good luck!

My family is thinking of moving to NYC. The thought is so overwhelming. Can anyone recommend a good Special Ed lawyer? I think we’re going to need it. Thanks in advance for any info you can share.

Hi, The boards are just getting up and running. Thanks for posting. I know there are other members whose kids are in an NYC G&T school. How is it going for your son so far?
